What is a coverlet?

  • The Coverlet is a cross between a bedspread and a quilt cover or doona cover as we called them here in Australia. They are essentially a quilted bed cover or blanket that comes with matching pillow shams however the coverlets unlike bedspreads are not made to cover the pillowcases. The idea is to have the same look as a quilt cover/doona/duvet cover but with the ease of a bedspread.

Why do I need a coverlet?

  • If you are a hot sleeper and find that a doona/quilt is too heavy and still want an option for a cost-effective way to cover the bed and also have something lightweight then a coverlet is a perfect option.
  • Come the cooler months a coverlet can still be used as another layer between the doona and the sheets. A coverlet can also be used to decorate the bed and used as an accent on the end of the bed.

What are coverlets made from?

  • As with quilt covers, you will see that coverlets are also made in a range of materials and fabrics. The fabric types can be cotton, cotton rich , microfibre, satin, and velvet. Most cheaper quality coverlets are made of polyester or microfibre which are generally quite thin and not very padded but are very easy to care for.

What is the difference between a coverlet and a bedspread?

  • The main difference between a coverlet and a bedspread is their size. Coverlets typically fall just below the box spring, while bedspreads reach the floor. Coverlets are also generally lighter and less decorative than bedspreads.

When should I use a coverlet or bedspread?

  • Coverlets are a good option for year-round use. They can be used on their own in warmer weather or layered with blankets in colder weather. Bedspreads are typically used in colder weather or for decorative purposes.

How do I choose the right coverlet or bedspread for my bed?

  • When choosing a coverlet or bedspread, consider the size of your bed, the climate you live in, and your personal style. You should also choose a material that is comfortable to sleep under and easy to care for.

How do I care for my coverlet or bedspread?

  • Most coverlets and bedspreads can be machine-washed and dried on low heat. However, it is important to check the care label before washing to be sure.

How do I make my bed with a coverlet?

  • To make your bed with a coverlet or bedspread, start by tucking the fitted sheet under the mattress. Then, put on the top sheet and blanket(s), if desired. Finally, place the coverlet or bedspread over the bed and tuck it under the mattress at the foot of the bed.

How often should I wash my coverlet?

  • It is recommended to wash your coverlet or bedspread every 3-4 weeks. However, if you have pets or allergies, you may need to wash it more often.

How to select the right coverlet set for every season?

  • Choosing the appropriate coverlet set based on the season is essential to ensure optimal comfort. During warmer months, consider opting for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. These materials help regulate body temperature and promote a cooler sleep environment. For colder seasons, cosy up with coverlet sets made from materials like wool or fleece, providing added warmth and insulation,Alternativelty opting for a comfortor.
